Planners’ comments
Thanks to everyone that came to this morning’s event and made it such a pleasure to organise. I really did enjoy the experience of planning a SOG. All of the kind words of encouragement were very much appreciated.
It was the first event that I had planned outside the summer park-o’s, so what did I learn? Well I guess the most significant issue was the OCAD setting that was used to determine the length of the courses. It seems very likely that it was set to 1:10,000 when the map was actually 1:7,500 - thus making all the courses somewhat shorter than normal. (A number of people seemed quite pleased with their originally superfast min/km, but nevertheless apologies for this oversight!)  There were also some questions about the placing of control 96.  It is clear that a number of new paths have appeared over the winter as the undergrowth died back and I should have considered some minor map updates in this area.
We had first time winners on the Orange and Green courses.  Only the second time out for Sam Carpmael, but on his home turf he managed to achieve 7.27 min/km and win Orange by over 3 minutes. Congratulations to my neighbour Chris Hutton who had his first win on Green, pipping Julia Lindfield to the post by less than a minute.
Darrell High was ahead on the Blue course until control 10 when Vince Joyce took the lead and went on to win by 2 minutes.  Edward Lines had a clean run and after the initial hill climb led Yellow to win by one and a half minutes.
Thanks to Mike Baron for all his help and advice as Controller.  Until the controlling exercise I hadn’t understood that the start should not be on a path junction - so this is why it was moved 30m up the hill.
Thanks to Anna and Peter Chapman, Sue and Jim Parker, Ruth Rhodes, and Keith Tonkin for their help in collecting in controls. And also to Jaquie and Peter Drake for timing, Mike Gammon for printing, Clare for map sales, and Alex with his torch last night when we were trying to get at least some of the cntrols hung in advance.
